Magnus Energy expands business & technology expertise
Magnus Energy welcomes Martin van den Heuvel, a highly experienced consultant in the energy and utilities sector, to the partner team. With Martin on board, Magnus Energy is broadening its business and technology expertise. Providing valuable support to clients seeking improvement and innovation needed to forward the energy transition. What kind of knowledge and experience does Martin bring along? Let’s find out!
Martin, could you share insights into your career in the energy industry?
Graduating as a mechanical engineer from the Technical University of Eindhoven in 2002, I began my career as a consultant at Accenture. My focus encompassed diverse energy projects for organisations such as energy producers, suppliers, and grid operators. This spanned from project management for a Dutch distribution system operator (DSO) to consulting on Asset Management and Network Model solutions for multiple DSOs and TSOs. Later, at Siemens, I managed extensive projects on Smart Meters, Smart Grids, and Digitisation. Subsequently, I returned to consulting at Capgemini Invent, working on sustainability, innovation, digital asset registration, and the Control Room of the Future.
Any specific project highlights?
Certainly, it’s challenging to choose, but a few highlights include involvement in multiple implementations of energy management systems (EMS) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. Additionally, I collaborated on co-creating an innovation funnel, assisting a client in reaching sustainability targets and decarbonising its business and that of its customers. This involved creating a methodology and portfolio to define, select, and execute innovations as an incubator for new initiatives, both in business and technology, to realise a sustainable future.
What makes this sector so interesting?
It’s a dynamic industry in constant evolution. The transition from a predictable, centralised, and demand-driven energy system to a more volatile, decentralised, and balance-driven system is captivating. This transition is highly complex, requiring collaboration among various players, from traditional parties in the system to new providers, governments, regulators, and even consumers. I am eager to contribute to solving this intricate puzzle and realise the necessary changes.
What will be your role as a partner at Magnus Energy?
I am here to expand our Business & Technology consulting services, utilising my expertise to help organisations successfully navigate transformation through technological innovations in a holistic way. Fortunately, Magnus Energy already has excellent consultants experienced in designing and implementing business and technological changes. Together, we can support organisations in the energy industry facing diverse challenges.
What kinds of challenges are we talking about?
One critical challenge is the Control Room of the Future. The energy transition introduces increased volatility, altering the dynamics in the control room significantly. Grid operators will need to leverage new data-driven technologies to balance the grids, necessitating a transition to real-time monitoring and control systems. This transformation is poised to be a substantial shift at the core of our energy system.
Any hopes or dreams for the future?
Firstly, I’m looking forward to getting to know the team and clients of Magnus Energy. I am keen to learn about their specific challenges and ambitions. My dream is to guide them through the many changes to come, contributing to the development of future-proof energy systems for a sustainable world.
