Welcoming power markets IT expert Peter van Dorp
Long-time power markets & IT expert Peter van Dorp joins Magnus Energy as an associate consultant. Known for his work on European electricity market integration, he brings unique expertise and experience to the table: from market coupling to balancing, and from conceptual complexities to realisation. Let’s meet Peter van Dorp.
Can you tell us a bit about your professional background?
Schooled as a classicist and philosopher, I love building bridges between different worlds. When I entered the IT profession 30 years ago, I learned to bridge the gap between the worlds of IT and business. After my career in the financial sector, I moved into power markets in 2006. Ever since, I have been involved in many European electricity market integration projects.
What kind of projects have you been working on?
I’ve been involved in many of the milestones Magnus Energy has been working on as well. I have worked on programmes for Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC), Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC), as well as the MARI project for the balancing market. At the NEMO side, the TSO side, as well as for regulatory authorities. What they have in common is that these are all complex multi-party projects in an international setting.
What would be your role, typically?
Functional and technical design is at the core of my activities. Understanding the details, the inherent possibilities and impossibilities of a system or situation and using this to devise new solutions – always in cooperation with experts in the field.
Currently, my focus is on an Intraday Flow-Based R&D role. I work on implementing flow-based capacity allocation in the continuous intraday market. The assignment is carried out on behalf of the entire SIDC project, a cooperation of TSOs and NEMOs.
Why join Magnus Energy?
I have worked with Magnus Energy’s teams before and always had a positive impression. What I also like is the fact that Magnus Energy has its own Academy, which allows me to educate others – something I love doing.
“I’m thrilled to have Peter van Dorp in our team as an associate. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from the world of power exchanges. This is of much value to many of the projects we’re working on.” – Alexander van der Mark, Managing Director of Magnus Energy
