Resource Adequacy & Capacity Mechanisms
How do we know whether Europe has enough generation, storage and demand-side resources to keep the lights on - not just tomorrow, but ten years from now? Learn from the best in an online training with our experts.
What you'll learn
This online training demystifies Resource Adequacy in the EU, from ENTSO-E’s European Resource Adequacy Assessment (ERAA) to the design and regulation of capacity mechanisms.
You will learn how adequacy risks are quantified, when energy-only markets are deemed insufficient, and how Member States are (and are not) allowed to intervene - all through a practical, system-level lens grounded in the EU regulation and national capacity market implementations.
Topics treated in this training
- What is Resource Adequacy?
- ERAA: The EU adequacy assessment framework
- When does adequacy become a “concern”?
- Capacity mechanisms: what, why, how
- Case studies
- Wrap-Up and key takeaways
Why join this training?
Compare key concepts: Understand the difference between resource adequacy, system security, balancing and congestion management; between capacity and balancing capacity markets.
Build a strong foundation: Learn how the ERAA works in practice, what its indicators really mean, and how its results are used to capacity mechanisms.
Follow the process timeline: See the full chain from adequacy assessment to market failure identification to capacity mechanism design to EU approval and, finally, to market results.
Deepen your knowledge: Understand how different factors and technologies contribute to system adequacy, what are the key types and elements of capacity mechanisms and their impact on the system, markets and investment incentives.
Explore real-world cases: Discuss concrete examples from across Europe (strategic reserves, capacity markets, transitional mechanisms) and what they reveal about the future of EU electricity markets.
For whom?
Fundamental level
This training is indispensable if you want to understand why and under what conditions an EU country moves from energy-only markets to capacity mechanisms and what that means for investment risk and revenue certainty. It equips participants to read ERAA results critically, anticipate policy and market-design shifts and position flexible assets where security of supply concerns are most likely to translate into concrete market opportunities.
A good understanding of the functioning of the electricity markets are recommended for this training.
We recommend signing up for EU Electricity Markets – Fundamentals and The What, Why and How of Energy System Flexibility before joining this training. To complete the learning experience, we recommend also signing up for Balancing Markets in the EU.
