Capacity Markets study
As the current capacity market (CM) in Poland approaches expiration, the question arises whether it should be extended – and, if so, how it could be designed to support the security supply and the energy transition. Magnus Energy conducted a study for the Polish think-tank Forum Energii, using a scenario-based approach and proposing a way forward – supporting the debate on the Polish energy transition.
Key figures
- 10+ Polish stakeholders involved
- 4 future scenarios
Approach
Capacity market analysis: We perform a KPI-based review of eight past auction results, analyse the current CM design, develop a target model for the future CM, and propose market design adjustments. Interaction between adequacy and flexibility: We explore current and future use cases for flexibility, its interaction with adequacy, and map out four scenarios for the Future System Vision
Results
The study provided in-depth insights and possible scenarios for the Polish capacity markets and flexibility procurement. Since its publication, the study has been used in the debate leading up to policy makers’ decision-making.
