Building a learning community with masterclasses
The Market Coupling Steering Committee (MCSC) is a governing body that brings together key players in European electricity market integration. Its TSO branch (MCSC TSO) consists of more than 30 Transmission System Operators (TSOs). These organisations collaborate to implement EU regulations and create a truly integrated European electricity market.
However, keeping pace with evolving requirements and developments isn’t easy. This is true for both newcomers and long-standing TSO members involved in MCSC’s working groups and task forces. To support them, the MCSC TSO, in partnership with Magnus Energy, has launched an annual training cycle. It’s designed to involve and connect participants of all experience levels, offering both in-person and online sessions.
Key figures
- 400+ participants trained in 7 editions so far
- From 30+ European TSOs, the Joint Allocation Office (JAO), ENTSO-E, and several Regional Coordination Centres (RCCs)
- >95% of on-site participants say they would recommend the Masterclasses to others
A growing need for shared knowledge
Electricity market coupling projects are complex. For both new and experienced TSO participants, it can sometimes be difficult to stay on top of all the requirements. New EU network codes, guidelines, and countless terms, conditions, and methodologies are continuously introduced at both European and regional levels. Beyond the technical challenges, building a sense of community is essential. Cross-border cooperation between TSOs plays a crucial role in driving forward the integration of European electricity markets.
Turning complexity into learning
Working closely with MCSC TSO representatives, Magnus Energy began by identifying key areas for the annual training programme. These included fundamental concepts, core processes, and recent developments that would be most relevant for TSO participants.
Next, the topics were grouped into broader knowledge areas:
- The evolution of European electricity markets. This covers key stakeholders and the latest regulatory changes shaping market coupling projects.
- Technical and operational processes. Sessions address the different market timeframes, from long-term to day-ahead and intraday.
- Additional initiatives. These include research, development efforts, and other projects relevant to market coupling.
The Market Coupling Masterclasses
To meet these needs, a dedicated knowledge-sharing programme was created — the Market Coupling Masterclasses. A central focus of the Masterclasses is building a strong community. On-site trainings include a variety of networking opportunities, from informal conversations to dinners and social events. These activities help nurture a true Market Coupling community across Europe.
A learning community
Since launching the first edition in 2023, multiple Market Coupling Masterclass sessions have been delivered. Both Fundamentals and Advanced levels are available. Interest continues to grow, not just among TSOs but also among service providers like the Joint Allocation Office (JAO), Regional Coordination Centres (RCCs), and ENTSO-E.
Participants benefit in several ways:
- They deepen their knowledge of EU market coupling rules and context.
- Newcomers onboard faster and more effectively.
- Recent developments, challenges, and new ideas are shared and discussed openly.
- Professional networks expand, building valuable cross-border connections.
“We will continue with our quarterly sessions, rotating between onsite and online formats, and offer both entry and advanced levels. Our aim is to deliver exceptional learning experiences for every participant. A big shout-out to the entire Magnus Energy team!”
– André Estermann (MCSC TSO Chair)
