Celebrating the 15-Minute MTU go-live across Europe
Yesterday, a major milestone in European electricity market integration was reached. The 15-minute Market Time Unit (MTU) in the Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) has been implemented across all European bidding zones and bidding zone borders. An important step towards an affordable, secure, and sustainable energy system. Why is this such a big step? What was behind this massive operation? And what has been Magnus Energy’s role?
SDAC – key to an affordable and secure energy system
The SDAC allocates scarce cross-border transmission capacity most efficiently by coupling wholesale electricity markets from different regions through a common algorithm, simultaneously taking into account cross-border transmission constraints – thereby maximising social welfare. The aim of SDAC is to create a single pan-European cross-zonal day-ahead electricity market. An integrated day-ahead market increases the overall efficiency of trading by promoting effective competition, increasing liquidity, and enabling a more efficient utilisation of generation resources across Europe.
The 15-Minute MTU – key to the rise in renewable energy
The 15-minute MTU shortens the time interval for which electricity can be priced and traded. It increases the granularity of electricity trading, which will help Europe’s electricity system to handle the volatile generation patterns of renewable energy better. Until yesterday, these time intervals, known as Market Time Unit (MTU), were 60 minutes on European borders in the Day-ahead. Now, SADAC, Europe’s most liquid energy market, has implemented this shorter MTU.
Intensive cooperation
The implementation of the 15-minute MTU across all European bidding zones and bidding zone borders has been an incredibly complex operation. It required the 32 Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and 17 Nominated Electricity Market Operators (NEMOs) in the Market Coupling Steering Committee (MCSC), as well as RCCs and JAO, to work together intensively. They had to adjust the common market coupling methods, processes, IT systems, and information-sharing to this new timeframe. It required all parties involved to change their internal ways of working, too. Last but not least, market parties were involved in the implementation process to ensure a smooth transition for the participants
Exhaustive testing
A 1+ year-long testing campaign for the 15-minute MTU solution included the validation of local, regional and cross-border functionalities, verification of connectivity between parties and confirmation of overall system readiness. Throughout the campaign, NEMOs and TSOs tested their systems under a wide range of market conditions. Two iterations of member testing also enabled market participants to confirm the readiness of their own systems.
Magnus Energy’s role
Magnus Energy provides the Program Management Office for the MCSC and thus has been intensively involved in this project, too. Magnus Energy’s Patrícia Brhlíková: “MCSC is an incredibly complex multiparty programme, and the 15-minute MTU has been a key priority. We’re glad to have played our role in supporting all NEMOs and TSOs, the many working groups and the steering committee in moving this milestone forward. ”
What’s next
On 30 September 2025 (trading day), the go-live took place for delivery day 1 October 2025. In the coming days, the project parties will – as planned – closely monitor the stability and robustness of system performance.
