How to balance the Energy Trilemma

Magnus Energy helps clients navigate the energy transition. Offering knowledge, structure, and support at every step of the way. Balancing energy security, sustainability, and affordability. It’s what is called the Energy Trilemma. What does this trilemma entail? And how does Magnus Energy support clients in finding the right balance?

What is the Energy Trilemma?

The Energy Trilemma, first introduced by the World Energy Council, defines the interconnected challenges of energy security, energy equity and environmental sustainability. These three dimensions must be carefully balanced to ensure a stable, fair, and sustainable energy system. Achieving this balance is critical in guiding the energy transition, shaping investment decisions, and supporting policy frameworks. All while keeping the lights on.

The World Energy Council identifies 3 cornerstones of the trilemma:

  • Energy Security – Ensuring a reliable and uninterrupted energy supply through diversified sources, infrastructure resilience, and risk mitigation.
  • Energy Equity – Providing affordable and accessible energy to all, addressing social and economic disparities.
  • Environmental Sustainability – Reducing carbon emissions and environmental impact while transitioning to cleaner energy solutions.

How to balance this trilemma?

We believe that balancing energy security, affordability, and sustainability is key to creating resilient energy systems. This is far from easy, though. It requires players in the energy sector to work on a long-term horizon while navigating short-term weather. How can they manage this?

  • Take a holistic view. Players in the energy sector will need to take a holistic view. To understand -and navigate- the many external trends that affect the sector as well as energy regulations, stakeholders, and interdependencies.
  • Make data-driven decisions. Players must also assess the impact of their policies and investments against the trilemma framework. For this, they must use data-driven approaches to incorporate all relevant variables.
  • Adopt new technologies. To incorporate security, affordability, and sustainability into day-to-day operations, players must also innovate. Adopting the latest technologies to find smart energy solutions.

As a leading consultancy in the European energy sector, Magnus Energy is here to guide our clients. Providing strategic guidance, program management, and technical and regulatory expertise. Supporting our clients to bridge the gap between business and technology. Helping them to navigate their challenges effectively.

How do we support our clients in balancing the Energy Trilemma?

Our energy transition experts help clients to balance the Energy Trilemma every day. We support individual organisations and international consortia of system operators, power exchanges, regulatory bodies, energy producers, energy retailers, utilities, and industrial users. Here are some examples of how we work on security, affordability and sustainability:

How we help by focusing on security

  • Modernise the grid. An important step for energy security is modernising power grids that incorporate system flexibility, using the latest technologies that enable near real-time insights. It’s something we’re working on every day. We help design and implement solutions for energy system flexibility. Also, our team supports policymakers in designing new rules and regulations for this and helps to implement these into daily operations, for example, of TSO.
  • Market integration. We guide cross-border projects to ensure a robust and stable energy supply. We support international consortia, often comprised of system operators, power exchanges, etc., in enhancing coordination and optimising capacity allocation. Also, we support new cross-border interconnectors to incorporate them in these cross-border operations. All working towards energy market integration and minimising supply risks.
  • Data management. An important prerequisite for all this is to have future-proof data management systems. We support the implementation of advanced forecasting solutions. For instance, we help design the concept and the required functions for the Control Room of the Future. Also, we support the vendor selection for and implementation of EMS/SCADA solutions.

How we help by focusing on affordability

  • Market Design. Fair access to markets is a key component to ensuring affordable energy. We support stakeholders by developing and advising on market designs and regulatory frameworks. Take our work in cross-border hydrogen infrastructure – we supported both a ground-breaking pilot and policymakers to fine-tune its regulatory requirements.
  • Impact Assessment. We provide data analytics and policy assessments to enable inclusive energy decision-making. A notable example is our study into the impacts of a new interconnector, what is the expected social welfare?
  • Operational Excellence. We support energy companies in creating cost-effective operations by optimising resources, enhancing efficiency, and reducing waste. For instance, we supported a consortium of DSOs to handle consumer services together, creating notable synergy effects. This enables affordable energy delivery without sacrificing reliability or sustainability.
  • Community Based. We support business model innovations for affordability, which include community-based energy initiatives. An important example is the ongoing dialogue between the four German TSOs and their electricity market stakeholders.

How we help by focusing on sustainability

  • Renewable Energy. We facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources and decarbonisation strategies by supporting pan-European sector integration. We help advance sector coupling solutions to maximise efficiency across electricity, gas, and hydrogen networks. As well as supporting a ground-breaking cross-border hydrogen project, we guide stakeholders to adapt to new regulations in that area.
  • Impact Assessments. We conduct impact assessments and strategy development for sustainable energy investments.
  • Transition Support. We support the sector transformation towards a sustainable energy system by bringing together stakeholders and facilitating decision-making. All focused on realising the green energy transition across Europe.
