What are the latest updates on The Energy Community?
The Energy Community: An Introduction
In its first edition, one chapter of the European Electricity Market Coupling ‘handbook’ described the Energy Community (EnC) and its developments to expand the European Union’s legal framework to the Contracting Parties and to establish an integrated energy market between Contracting Parties and the European Community.
The further integration of the European Union’s Eastern neighbours into the internal electricity market is crucial for both the EnC and the European Union.
As a basis, the national transposition of the European Union’s acquis in the EnC is not only required under the Electricity Integration Package (EIP) but also part of Chapter 15, the basis for the energy accession criteria in the accession negotiations.
It is, however, a two-way street; the European Commission has also recognised the importance of EU’s immediate neighbours to take action for the European energy transition to be fully effective. The objectives established in the Energy Community Treaty are both a shared responsibility and a mutual benefit.
